For nearly two decades, Essentia has been redefining the way we sleep—placing wellness at the heart of its mission. Unlike generic boxed mattress brands, Essentia’s philosophy goes far beyond comfort. They’ve created the world’s only slow-response organic latex foam—Beyond Latex™â€”crafted to promote optimal health and deep, restorative sleep. Their patented organic molding process, chemical-free materials, and focus on eco-conscious manufacturing have made them the preferred brand for those with chemical sensitivities and sleep performance needs.
But despite their product excellence, Essentia’s online store wasn’t keeping pace with the expectations of their high-end clientele. Customers couldn’t easily compare products or browse with ease, especially on mobile. Stefanie, the client’s lead representative, approached WebDesk Solution to lead a critical digital transformation. From integrating a fully custom product comparison app to overhauling UI/UX design with zig-zag layouts and regulatory fee logic—this was more than a website redesign. It was a mission to align Essentia’s digital experience with its core values of health, clarity, and sophistication.
From the start, our team at WebDesk Solution knew this wasn’t a standard Shopify Plus design upgrade. Stefanie needed a digital experience that mirrored the sophistication and technical innovation behind Essentia’s patented sleep technology. With Daniel and Mike leading discovery sessions, we dug deep into user behavior, operational pain points, and platform constraints.
One core insight emerged early: customers were struggling to make informed choices. They would open multiple tabs, compare prices across sites, and abandon the buying journey—undermining trust and eroding conversions. To fix this, we needed to solve the comparison challenge directly within the Shopify Plus environment—without relying on clunky third-party apps.
Our team architected a solution centered around a custom-built product comparison app, deeply integrated with Shopify metafields. We enhanced the UX with responsive mobile design, multi-tabbed product pages, and a zig-zag layout strategy to create visual momentum. We layered in technical logic to automatically add region-specific recycling fees, meeting regulatory requirements while maintaining transparency.
Every design choice, line of code, and user flow was crafted to reflect the wellness-first ethos of Essentia—leading to a site that not only looks beautiful but works brilliantly.
1. Battling Price-Driven Abandonment in a Saturated Market
Essentia faced a growing trend of customers comparing prices across competitor sites, forcing a race-to-the-bottom mentality. This price-centric behavior was cutting into already slim margins and damaging the brand’s perception as a premium wellness product. The absence of value-based comparison tools meant customers defaulted to price as their decision anchor. This wasn’t just a technical gap—it was a threat to Essentia’s entire value proposition.
2. Tab Fatigue & Conversion Drop-Off from Multi-Tab Comparison
Customers trying to compare mattresses were forced to open multiple browser tabs, jumping between PDPs (Product Detail Pages). This tab overload not only created cognitive fatigue but also led to high bounce rates and significantly lower conversion rates. The user experience felt fragmented, especially on mobile, where navigation was already constrained. The brand’s premium identity wasn’t translating into a premium shopping flow.
3. Absence of a Detailed Product Comparison Mechanism
Shopify’s native feature set does not support detailed product comparison across custom metafields. For Essentia, this meant customers couldn’t compare key differentiators like foam density, certifications, layer structure, or wellness impact. Without a robust comparison feature, users were left guessing—or worse, leaving the site to find the info elsewhere. The stakes were high, and the solution had to be custom-built from the ground up.
4. Ensuring Seamless, Intuitive UX Across Devices
Creating a frictionless shopping experience that works seamlessly on both desktop and mobile was a core design mandate. Users needed to browse specs, compare products, read reviews, and make purchases—all without unnecessary clicks or reloads. The UI had to embody simplicity without sacrificing depth, while reinforcing the brand’s natural, wellness-forward image.
5. Retaining Visitors Without Losing Them to Competitor Sites
Each time a user left the site to check specs or pricing elsewhere, Essentia lost control of the buying journey. With no sticky features to keep users engaged, customer retention was suffering. Recapturing that journey required tools that would engage and empower the user—giving them everything they needed to make decisions without ever leaving the site.
6. Shopify’s Platform Limitations for Custom Functionality
The Shopify Plus platform, while powerful, has limitations when it comes to advanced custom features like detailed comparison logic or dynamic fee applications. Delivering a truly bespoke experience meant working around these constraints using APIs, metafields, and custom frontend/backend integrations—all without compromising speed, stability, or design coherence.
1. Custom Product Comparison App Built for Contextual Clarity & Conversion
To directly address the user comparison gap, we engineered a private Shopify Plus app from scratch—purpose-built to empower customers to compare products based on detailed specifications that matter most to health-conscious shoppers.
This bespoke app enables side-by-side comparison of up to three products, pulling from dynamic Shopify metafields such as foam composition, thickness, certifications, firmness levels, and warranty terms. It features a drag-and-drop interface and renders comparisons in real time across desktop and mobile, maintaining responsiveness and clarity throughout the experience.
Tech Stack Used:
Because the app is hosted externally on AWS Lambda, we bypassed Shopify’s theme and app block limitations. This allowed us to build freely while maintaining seamless integration via secure API endpoints. The result was a fast, scalable solution that felt native to the Shopify Plus environment.

This comparison engine became a cornerstone of Essentia’s upgraded shopping experience—reducing bounce rates, increasing session duration, and giving customers everything they needed to make informed decisions without leaving the store. By blending robust technical execution with user-first design, we redefined how Essentia’s customers engage with high-performance sleep products.
2. Seamless Integration of Location-Based Recycling Fee Logic
Understanding the need to comply with eco-regulatory mandates, we built a location-aware logic system that dynamically adds a recycling fee based on the customer’s shipping address. When triggered, the fee appears as a transparent “Eco-Friendly” line item during checkout, offering clarity and compliance without disrupting the customer journey. This feature was crucial for legal adherence across multiple U.S. and Canadian regions and reinforced Essentia’s environmental commitment.
3. Zig-Zag Visual Pattern & Category Page UX Innovation
To align with modern design trends while enhancing user engagement, we implemented a zig-zag layout pattern across category pages and PDPs. This subtle yet effective design strategy draws the eye down the page, improving product exploration and visual variety. The updated category pages group similar products under expandable sections, allowing customers to narrow down their options visually before diving into comparison mode. The result: increased time-on-page and reduced visual fatigue.
