Quick Summary
Five Star Jewelers, a Miami fine jewelry retailer, had outgrown a PrestaShop store that was causing bugs, performance issues and data inconsistencies. WebDesk Solution ran an ecommerce replatforming to Shopify Plus with custom PHP and Python migration scripts, a step-by-step product option selector and site-wide 301 redirects, while the PrestaShop store stayed live. In the three months after the August 15, 2023 launch, revenue rose 33.34% and visits rose 15% against the three months before.
Overview
PrestaShop-to-Shopify Migration with Custom Data Mapping, Parallel Launch Planning, and SEO Preservation
For over 35 years, Five Star Jewelers has been a cornerstone of Miami’s fine jewelry scene. Founded by Jorge Carvajal, the company’s ethos revolves around family, precision, and community. With six locations across Miami, they offer custom jewelry, expert repairs, appraisals, and in-house financing-all delivered with a Cuban heart and a family-first approach. Beyond their jewelry, they’ve built a workplace culture that prioritizes personal growth, wellness, and giving back to the community through volunteer work and philanthropy.
But when it came to their digital storefront, their online experience was falling behind. Their PrestaShop site, while once dependable, was now causing performance hiccups, data inconsistencies, and operational headaches. Eddie and Fannie, representing the business, knew it was time for a transformation-one that wouldn’t just replace an aging platform, but elevate the entire online experience to reflect the elegance of the Five Star brand.
That’s when they reached out to WebDesk Solution.

Migration Approach
When Five Star Jewelers came to us, their PrestaShop system was riddled with bugs and bottlenecks. What began as a 50-hour maintenance retainer quickly turned into something much larger. During a discovery session with Fannie & Eddie, our team conducted a full technical audit of the store-and what we found confirmed their fears. Outdated modules, performance lags, and platform limitations were stifling scalability and hurting the customer experience.
We recommended a platform migration to Shopify-a system designed for stability, growth, and simplicity. But we didn’t stop there.
Our approach included:
- Keeping the PrestaShop store fully operational during the entire build phase
- Designing a mobile-first, luxury-inspired user experience on Shopify
- Rebuilding product hierarchies and optimizing navigation for ease of use
- Mapping out data migration in multiple phases to ensure accuracy and integrity
- Setting up SEO-safe redirects to preserve their long-earned organic rankings
The new Shopify Plus store went live on August 15, 2023.
Our end goal was to not only solve the immediate pain points but also to future-proof their digital business. Eddie and Fannie didn’t just need a store-they needed a platform to grow with, confidently and securely.
What challenges did Five Star Jewelers face before moving from PrestaShop to Shopify?
Five Star Jewelers’ PrestaShop store was causing bugs, performance issues, data inconsistencies and operational friction, and the store relied on data structures, customer account behavior, pricing logic and product relationships that did not map directly to Shopify’s architecture. That left eight problems to solve: incompatible data, a three-option limit, product relationships, customer passwords, group pricing, custom design features, a live-store switchover and SEO risk.
Five Star Jewelers’ PrestaShop data did not fit Shopify’s different architecture
Migrating from PrestaShop to Shopify wasn’t a matter of copy-paste. The two platforms have different architectures, making data mapping particularly intricate. Thousands of products, customer profiles, and order histories had to move between the two platforms. In luxury eCommerce, even a small data mismatch can create trust issues with high-value customers.
Five Star Jewelers’ customizable jewelry needed more than Shopify’s three product options
Five Star Jewelers offered an extensive range of customizable jewelry-necklace chains, gemstone types, metal colors, engraving options, and more. However, Shopify only allows three product options per item (e.g., size, color, material). This limitation directly conflicted with the personalized experience Five Star was known for. Cutting options or forcing them into limited dropdowns would have undermined that personalized experience. Customers also needed to move through many attributes without confusion during the selection process.
Five Star Jewelers’ parent-child collections and related-product links had no native Shopify equivalent
The original PrestaShop store had a detailed parent-child collection system and dynamic related product associations that supported upselling and guided customer discovery. Unfortunately, Shopify doesn’t natively support such complex relationships. The challenge was to preserve product groupings like multi-piece sets or variant-based browsing in a platform that organizes products into flat collections. Without careful planning, this could break internal product links, cause customer confusion, and disrupt purchasing behavior-especially for shoppers familiar with curated jewelry bundles or seasonal style collections.
Five Star Jewelers’ customer passwords could not be transferred to Shopify
PrestaShop encrypted customer passwords using an algorithm incompatible with Shopify, meaning passwords couldn’t be transferred. Without an effective plan, thousands of customers would be unable to log in post-migration-damaging trust, causing support spikes, and potentially leading to lost sales. Every customer’s name, email, order history, and address still had to move securely, and customers needed a way back into their accounts. Both the brand experience and the security of customer data were at stake.
Five Star Jewelers’ group pricing, price lists and sort orders had no out-of-the-box Shopify match
Five Star’s PrestaShop store supported group-based pricing models, advanced product sort orders, and customer-specific price lists-all essential for B2B and VIP customer flows. Shopify’s native feature set doesn’t support these out-of-the-box. The challenge was to ensure business-critical pricing strategies weren’t lost in the migration. Failing to replicate these settings would have hurt both customer satisfaction and revenue. Any replacement also had to avoid adding administrative complexity for the store team.
Five Star Jewelers’ custom design features were tied to PrestaShop’s frontend engine
The original website had a distinct visual identity and feature-rich design elements that didn’t translate easily into Shopify’s Liquid-based templating structure. Key UI components-such as interactive lookbooks, promo banners, and hover interactions-were tightly tied to PrestaShop’s frontend engine. Those experiences, and the Five Star aesthetic, had to survive the move to Shopify’s Liquid framework. Some components could not be carried over as they were, and the store still had to load fast and render well on every device.
Five Star Jewelers could not afford broken pages, lost orders or unavailable products during the switch
Customer experience continuity was a non-negotiable priority for Five Star Jewelers. The store couldn’t afford broken pages, lost orders, or unavailable products during the switchover. The PrestaShop store had to stay live while the new Shopify store was built and tested. The customer journey, from homepage to checkout, had to stay uninterrupted during and after the migration.
Five Star Jewelers’ organic traffic and backlink equity were at risk when URLs and metadata changed
With years of organic traffic, backlink equity, and search visibility at stake, SEO preservation was one of the most sensitive parts of this migration. PrestaShop and Shopify handle URL structures, meta titles, tags, and redirects differently. A poorly planned migration could have led to broken links, lost page rankings, and traffic drops. Every high-ranking URL and all SEO metadata had to carry over to protect Five Star’s hard-earned visibility.

How did WebDesk Solution solve Five Star Jewelers’ PrestaShop to Shopify challenges?
WebDesk Solution answered each challenge with one piece of work: custom migration scripts, a step-by-step option selector, rebuilt product groupings, a customer import with a Klaviyo reset campaign, Shopify Plus pricing rules, a Liquid design rebuild, a parallel build and a URL and metadata map.
WebDesk Solution built custom migration scripts on a temporary Linux server
Migrating from PrestaShop to Shopify posed significant technical challenges due to fundamental differences in how the two platforms handle data structures. To address this, WebDesk Solution engineered a series of robust custom scripts and utilized a secure Linux-based temporary server to run the migration while protecting data integrity throughout.
We developed scripts to extract critical datasets from PrestaShop, including products, categories, customers, and order histories. This data was first staged on a Linux server for cleansing, validation, and transformation to match Shopify’s import-ready formats. Our team implemented multiple layers of validation logic to detect and eliminate duplicate or malformed entries, resolve field mapping inconsistencies, and ensure relational data-such as customer orders-remained intact. Each piece of data was manually checked, cleaned, and tested so there were no discrepancies.
Tech Stack & Execution Environment:
- Server Environment: Temporary Linux-based cloud server for data processing
- Scripting Language: PHP and Python for data extraction and transformation
- Database Layer: CSV-based intermediate storage with checksum validation
- Integration Points: Shopify Admin API for importing cleaned datasets
Key Technical Highlights:
- Migrated 100% of product catalog with titles, descriptions, images, tags, and collections
- Converted and stored PrestaShop order IDs into Shopify order notes for tracking continuity
- Migrated products with more than three options and sold them through the step-by-step option selector (Solution 2)
- Sanitized and imported every customer record; issued password reset emails post-launch
By developing a fully controlled, script-based migration process, we avoided the pitfalls of third-party tools and ensured a high-fidelity transfer of legacy data into the Shopify ecosystem. This solution laid the foundation for a smooth platform transition, enabling Five Star Jewelers to retain historical insights, uphold customer trust, and maintain operational continuity on day one of their new Shopify store.
Migrating from PrestaShop to Shopify is never a plug-and-play task-it’s a meticulous, multi-phase transformation. For Five Star Jewelers, WebDesk Solution designed a full-stack migration strategy that combined deep platform knowledge, hands-on scripting, and an understanding of operational dependencies. We began by auditing all PrestaShop modules, identifying legacy plugins, SEO assets, product types, and customer data structures that needed to be restructured for Shopify’s architecture. The migration process included careful staging, sandbox testing, and validation checkpoints at each milestone.
We avoided third-party auto-migration tools, opting instead to build our own suite of scripts to extract, transform, and import key data like products, customers, categories, and order histories. This allowed us to address Shopify’s platform nuances-such as variant limitations, metafield mappings, and collection structures-at a granular level. The end result was a smooth transition with zero data loss, full platform functionality, and a clean break from PrestaShop’s technical debt. This approach laid a stable, future-proof foundation for long-term eCommerce scalability on Shopify.
This migration was complex because Five Star Jewelers relied on PrestaShop-specific data structures, customer account behavior, pricing logic, and product relationships that did not map directly to Shopify’s architecture.
Key deliverables:
- Custom PHP and Python scripts extracted products, categories, customers, and order histories from PrestaShop.
- Data was staged on a temporary Linux server for cleansing, validation, and transformation into Shopify import formats.
- CSV-based intermediate storage used checksum validation before the Shopify Admin API imported the cleaned datasets.
- PrestaShop order IDs were stored in Shopify order notes to keep order tracking continuous.
- Result: 100% of the product catalog moved with its titles, descriptions, images, tags, and collections.

WebDesk Solution designed a step-by-step product option selector
To navigate Shopify’s limitation of only three product options per product, we designed an elegant, step-by-step selection interface using conditional logic. Rather than overwhelming users with all options at once, customers would select one attribute (e.g., chain length), then be guided to the next relevant choice (e.g., metal type, then gemstone). This allowed us to simulate a deeper level of customization without breaking Shopify’s structural rules. The UX remained clean, intuitive, and true to Five Star’s luxury positioning-all while ensuring backend simplicity and compatibility.
Key deliverables:
- Shoppers choose one attribute, such as chain length, before being guided to the next relevant choice.
- Conditional logic sequences the choices, for example metal type first and then gemstone.
- The interface simulates deeper customization without breaking Shopify’s three-option structural rules.
- Result: products with more than three options were migrated and are sold through the selector.

WebDesk Solution rebuilt product groupings with tags, metafields and custom collections
We rebuilt Five Star’s complex product groupings by leveraging Shopify’s tags, metafields, and custom collection logic. Each product was tagged to belong to specific “virtual” bundles or themed collections, such as matching earrings and necklaces or seasonal gifting sets. Related products were also linked using custom-coded blocks within the product detail page template. Though Shopify lacks parent-child relationships natively, our solution delivered the same outcome-curated pathways for customers to discover complementary products and increase basket size.
Key deliverables:
- Shopify tags, metafields, and custom collection logic rebuilt Five Star’s complex product groupings.
- Products were tagged into “virtual” bundles such as matching earrings and necklaces or seasonal gifting sets.
- Custom-coded blocks in the product detail page template link related products.
- Result: curated pathways help customers discover complementary products and increase basket size.
WebDesk Solution imported every customer record and ran a Klaviyo password reset campaign
Customer data was validated and cleaned using our custom scripts prior to import. We migrated every customer record with its name, address, email, and past orders. Post-launch, we triggered a branded password reset campaign using Klaviyo to help customers regain access securely and confidently. The reset emails included direct support links and FAQ content to minimize confusion. This helped Five Star retain customer loyalty while meeting both technical and privacy-related constraints around password encryption.
Key deliverables:
- Customer data was validated and cleaned with custom scripts before it was imported into Shopify.
- Every customer record moved with its name, address, email, and past orders.
- A branded Klaviyo password reset campaign ran after launch so customers could regain access securely.
- Reset emails included direct support links and FAQ content to minimize confusion.
- Result: Five Star retained customer loyalty while meeting the technical constraints around password encryption.
WebDesk Solution recreated group pricing and sorting with Shopify Plus discount rules
Using Shopify’s customer tagging and automated discount capabilities, we recreated group pricing logic for VIP or wholesale customers. Price lists were managed through Shopify Plus-compatible discount rules, and advanced sorting (e.g., sort by gemstone or popularity) was achieved using custom collection templates and metafields. While not a one-to-one match with PrestaShop, our solution provided a seamless experience for both admin users and customers-preserving personalized pricing strategies and enabling strategic product display for upselling opportunities.
Key deliverables:
- Customer tagging and automated discounts recreated group pricing logic for VIP or wholesale customers.
- Price lists were managed through Shopify Plus-compatible discount rules.
- Advanced sorting, such as by gemstone or popularity, used custom collection templates and metafields.
- Result: personalized pricing strategies were preserved for admin users and customers, though not one-to-one with PrestaShop.
WebDesk Solution rebuilt the Five Star design in Shopify’s Liquid framework
We translated the Five Star aesthetic into a performance-optimized Shopify theme by rebuilding key design elements using Liquid, HTML5, and CSS. Interactive banners, promo sliders, and iconography were adapted to align with Shopify’s frontend constraints without sacrificing visual quality. We also made use of Shopify Sections to provide Eddie and Fannie’s team with easy drag-and-drop content editing. Every visual asset was re-optimized for speed and responsiveness, resulting in a mobile-first, high-converting design tailored to luxury shoppers. Some components were redesigned from scratch where they could not be carried over from PrestaShop.
Key deliverables:
- Key design elements were rebuilt in a performance-optimized Shopify theme using Liquid, HTML5, and CSS.
- Interactive banners, promo sliders, and iconography were adapted to Shopify’s frontend constraints.
- Shopify Sections give the Five Star team drag-and-drop content editing.
- Result: every visual asset was re-optimized for speed and responsiveness in a mobile-first design.
WebDesk Solution staged the Shopify build in parallel with the live PrestaShop store
We staged the entire Shopify build on a private development domain while keeping PrestaShop operational. Once the Shopify store was finalized, tested, and SEO-mapped, we conducted a soft launch with a controlled DNS switch-over. Redirects were preloaded, caching settings were verified, and real-time analytics were monitored for anomalies. This “parallel migration” strategy was built to keep the customer experience uninterrupted and orders flowing during the transition.
The plan relied on comprehensive testing, detailed staging environments, careful DNS planning, and post-launch support, and every interaction from homepage to checkout was validated before and after the switch.
Key deliverables:
- The entire Shopify build was staged on a private development domain while PrestaShop stayed operational.
- The finalized store was tested and SEO-mapped before a soft launch with a controlled DNS switch-over.
- Redirects were preloaded, caching settings were verified, and real-time analytics were monitored for anomalies.
- Result: the Shopify Plus store went live on August 15, 2023 through a controlled DNS switch-over.
WebDesk Solution mapped every critical URL and carried SEO metadata over to Shopify
We conducted a comprehensive SEO audit before the migration, mapping every critical URL from PrestaShop to a corresponding Shopify path. 301 redirects were implemented site-wide, including for top landing pages and blog posts. Meta titles, descriptions, and image alt texts were carried over via CSV and verified post-import. Post-launch, we used Google Search Console and Ahrefs to monitor crawl errors and page indexation. In the three months after launch, site visits were 15% higher than in the three months before.
Key deliverables:
- A comprehensive SEO audit mapped every critical PrestaShop URL to a corresponding Shopify path.
- Shopify 301 redirects were implemented site-wide, including for top landing pages and blog posts.
- Meta titles, descriptions, and image alt texts were carried over via CSV and verified after import.
- Google Search Console and Ahrefs monitored crawl errors and page indexation after launch.
- Result: site visits were 15% higher in the three months after launch than in the three months before.

What business results followed Five Star Jewelers’ move to Shopify Plus?
Results compare the three months after the August 15, 2023 launch with the three months before.
- Revenue rose 33.34% and site visits rose 15% over the same three-month comparison.
- Every product, customer, and order record moved from PrestaShop to Shopify, with PrestaShop order IDs kept in Shopify order notes.
- Products with more than three options stayed on sale through the step-by-step option selector.
- Customers regained access to their accounts through a branded Klaviyo password reset campaign.
- VIP or wholesale pricing and advanced sorting carried over through Shopify Plus-compatible discount rules and metafields.
Conclusion
The Five Star Jewelers project shows that a move from PrestaShop to Shopify is decided by how the catalog logic is rebuilt, not by the theme. Shopify’s three-option limit, its flat collections and its missing price lists each needed a workaround: a step-by-step selector, tags and metafields, and discount rules on Shopify Plus. Custom scripts and a parallel build moved every record while the PrestaShop store stayed live. For a retailer with similar catalog rules, the lesson is to map each PrestaShop feature to its Shopify equivalent before migrating any data.
